Shoot at the Penthouse

I always prefer to work in the studio. It isolates people from their environment. They become in a sense . . .symbolic of themselves. I often feel that people come to me to be photographed as they would go to a doctor or a fortune teller - to find out how they are.

The workshop is divided into several stages :

  • Schedule Presentation and introduction to the workshop

  • Outline of the chosen make up and styling

  • Explanation and preparation of the light setup

  • First shooting session

  • Short break and variation of the light setup

  • Doubts and questions

  • Second shooting session

  • Final thoughts

Open to both beginners and intermediate photographers the event will be held in a relaxed studio environment where everyone can contribute with his/her own ideas to the shooting.

Luca has now been working in the photography industry for over 25 years; and is also continually active with events and talks, and invited to judge photography competitions.

Focus on technique : Kinoflo

kinoflo-2gf-lrg.jpg

Kino Flo is a manufacturer of lighting equipment for use in motion pictures, television and photography. Located in Burbank, California, Kino Flo is best known for its fluorescent tube arrangements that are used for the color of film and digital video. These lights provide a relatively compact and efficient way of providing soft lighting. Compared to the original workhorse of motion picture lighting, incandescent lights (and, more recently, HMI lights), Kino Flo tubes produce less heat and fit into smaller spaces, two significant advantages that have made them popular with professionals.

kinoflo-2gf-lrg.jpg

Soft light use is popular in cinematography and film. Various Hollywood production companies along with independent film makers are known for their use of soft lights.

The first Kino Flo unit was created in 1987, during the filming of the movie Barfly. Director of photography Robby Müller was filming in a cramped interior, and couldn't fit traditional lights into the location. In order to work around the problem, the film's gaffer Frieder Hochheim and best boy Gary Swink designed a high-output fluorescent light that had a remote ballast, allowing the lamp unit to become small and lightweight enough to be taped to the wall.[1] Hochheim and Swink subsequently created a company, Kino Flo Incorporated, to manufacture and market their innovation to the film industry. The new lights were quickly embraced by cinematographers, and now are considered a staple of a standard motion picture lighting package.

image_output.php.jpeg

The two major innovations of the unit were the high-frequency ballast, which gave the lights greater intensity and eliminated flicker commonly found in off-the-shelf fluorescent tubes, and the Kino Flo tubes, which contained a number of special phosphors designed to eliminate the characteristic tints in the magenta-green spectrum which are present in most domestic fluorescent lights.[3] Since the type of tube determines the color temperature, any Kino Flo lamphead can be quickly converted between daylight and tungsten balances by simply changing out the tubes. Mid-range color temperature can also be created by mixing tubes of both color temperatures. Kino Flo have also expanded their tube line in recent years, creating visual effects tubes optimized for bluescreen and greenscreen spectra, as well as a variety of other shades for general color effects.

A portrait is not a likeness. The moment an emotion or fact is transformed into a photograph it is no longer a fact but an opinion. There is no such thing as inaccuracy in a photograph. All photographs are accurate. None of them is the truth.
— Richard Avedon

— Annie Leibovitz

What if I need help ?

As we have explained, this is your shoot, run by you. However, Luca Monti and the LPW team are never too far away if you need  any assistance.

What kind of lighting is provided ? Can I bring my own ?

We are proud to be able to say that LPW events are technically light-years ahead of any of our competitors. We have lighting from Bowens, Broncolor, Profoto, Briese, Arri and Kinoflo.  You are welcome to bring along any additional equipment you wish to use as long as you know how to use it. Remember, we don’t offer any tuition at these events.

Can I change the light or styling or the scenography ?

Yes, this is your shoot and you can make any changes you want to make it perfect. We only ask that you return everything to its original state at the end of your session.

Can I alter the Coloramas background ?

Alterations are not included in the price of the Meet the Model session. If you want to change the background, the studio price is 10GBP per metre used.

Can I bring my own models ?

If you have specific models you would like to use in addition to those provided by LPW, you may bring them along. However, you must accept full responsibility for their well-being and safety during the shoot.

Can I bring other creatives along ?

If you want to bring assistants or other creatives along with you, you may. However, they will each have to pay a booking fee. If you prefer to bring your own crew, please contact us and to discuss the possibility of a discounted fee.

What is Meet the Model ?

An LPW Meet the Model event makes you the director of your own private photo shoot. This is a unique and affordable opportunity to really let your own personal creative vision shine through.

We give you access to the best styling, lighting, props and models in the businesswith the added advantage of a very skilled assistant in the shape of our own Luca Monti

If you want a photographic experience which gives you the time, the freedom and the tools to really test your skills, look no further. With Meet the Model, the sky really is the limit!

Who is Meet the Model for ?

To get the most out of this unique opportunity, you need to feel confident behind the lens and comfortable enough to use your own judgment on the shoot. Having said that, we’re not going to leave you completely on your own; our team will be available to offer you technical support and useful tips if you need us.

This is one of our most popular events and many of our customers come back again and again to work with different models, with different styling and in different locations.

How does the session work ?

It’s brilliant in its simplicity. You book an hour-long session either alone or shared with another photographer. When you arrive, we will show you the studio and equipment, introduce you to the model and our team and then leave you to your shoot. You get to work in our studio with professional equipment, models and crew at a fraction of the normal cost of a shoot.
